SGPA to CGPA Calculator

Short answer. CGPA is not the plain average of your SGPAs. It is a credit weighted average: multiply each semester’s SGPA by that semester’s credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. When semesters carry different credits, a simple average can be off by a tenth or more. Enter your semesters below.

Credits are printed on each semester’s grade card. If you cannot find them, leave every semester at the same number and the result becomes a simple average.

CGPA = sum of (SGPA x credits) divided by total credits, rounded to two decimals, as set out in the AICTE based ordinances that most technical universities follow. Your university’s final grade card is the official figure.

The formula

Your SGPA, the semester grade point average, measures one semester. Your CGPA, the cumulative grade point average, measures the whole programme. The CGPA is built from the SGPAs, but each semester is weighted by how many credits it carried:

CGPA = (SGPA1 x C1 + SGPA2 x C2 + ... + SGPAn x Cn) / (C1 + C2 + ... + Cn)

Here C is the total credits of that semester. This is the definition in the AICTE based ordinances that most technical universities follow; AKTU's B.Tech ordinance, for example, states it in exactly this form and rounds the result to two decimals.

Why the simple average is wrong

If every semester carried the same credits, averaging the SGPAs would give the right answer. They rarely do. Early semesters are often heavier, and final semesters with a project or internship are often lighter. A strong final semester with 12 credits lifts your CGPA less than a strong second semester with 24.

CGPA = 606 / 76 = 7.97. The simple average of the four SGPAs is 8.25.

In that example, quoting the simple average would overstate the CGPA by 0.28, enough to move a converted percentage by nearly three points. On an application, that is the kind of mismatch a verifier notices against your grade card.

SGPI and CGPI

Some universities, including the University of Mumbai, call these SGPI and CGPI, the semester and cumulative grade performance index. The arithmetic is the same credit weighted average. Mumbai University no longer publishes a formula to turn CGPI into a percentage, though; since January 2026 the percentage comes from your actual marks.

Next step: the percentage

Once you have your CGPA, convert it with your own university's rule, not a generic one. The CGPA to percentage calculator has the formulas for CBSE, Delhi University, Anna University, VTU, JNTUH, AKTU, MAKAUT and SPPU. If you are applying to Germany, use the German grade calculator instead.

Questions people ask

Can I calculate CGPA without credits?

Only as an estimate. Without credits you can take a simple average, which is right only if every semester carried the same credits. The credits are printed on each grade card, so it is worth finding them.

Do backlogs or failed subjects change the CGPA?

That depends on your university's rules for how a cleared backlog is recorded and counted. Use the SGPAs and credits shown on your latest grade cards, which already reflect those rules.

Is the calculator's CGPA official?

No. Your university computes the official CGPA and prints it on your final grade card. Use this to check your number or to estimate it before results come out.
