CGPA to Percentage Calculator (University-wise Formulas)

Short answer. There is no single CGPA to percentage formula. CBSE and Delhi University multiply by 9.5, Anna University by 10, VTU, AKTU B.Tech and MAKAUT subtract 0.75 and multiply by 10, and JNTUH subtracts 0.5. Mumbai University dropped its formula in 2026. Pick your university below.

Each formula is taken from the university’s or board’s own regulations or circulars, listed at the end of this page. Your university’s conversion certificate is what admissions offices and banks accept, so use this to check, not to replace it.

Why the formulas differ

A CGPA is not a percentage on a different scale. It is an average of grade points, and each grade point stands for a band of marks. A 9 might mean anything from 80 to 89 percent, depending on the university's grading table. So each university works out its own line from CGPA back to marks, based on where its students actually scored, and the lines do not match.

That is why the same CGPA of 8.2 becomes 82 percent at Anna University, 77.9 percent at Delhi University, 77 percent at JNTUH and 74.5 percent at VTU. Converting with the wrong formula can move you across a 75 percent or 60 percent cutoff without you noticing.

Mumbai University changed the rules in 2026

Many calculators still apply a fixed University of Mumbai CGPI formula. That formula no longer stands. A circular dated 1 January 2026, following a Board of Examination and Evaluation resolution of 18 November 2025, repealed the earlier conversion circulars of 2018 and 2019. Now the percentage is calculated by your college from your actual marks across all semesters, and the university issues a conversion letter only if you ask for one. If you studied at a Mumbai University college, get that letter rather than relying on any formula.

How SPPU converts

Savitribai Phule Pune University does not use one formula. Its 2020 circular for all CBCS degree programmes from 2019 to 2020 sets a separate equation for each final grade:

Final gradePercentage of marks
O20 x CGPA minus 100
A+12 x CGPA minus 25
A10 x CGPA minus 7.5
B+5 x CGPA plus 26.25
B10 x CGPA minus 2.5
C10 x CGPA minus 2.5
D6.6 x CGPA plus 13.6
SPPU Circular No. 332 of 2020.

The calculator picks the band from your CGPA, using the points where these equations meet: 9.5 for O, 8.25 for A+, 6.75 for A, 5.75 for B+, 5.25 for B and 4.75 for C. Your grade card prints your final grade, so check that it matches before you use the result.

If you are applying abroad

Universities abroad generally do not use your converted percentage. They read your transcript and convert it themselves, or ask a credential evaluator to. Our guide to WES evaluation for Indian students explains when that applies. German universities use their own formula, which the German grade calculator handles. Where the percentage does matter is on Indian forms: bank education loan applications, scholarship cutoffs and some admissions portals that only accept a percentage.

Your CGPA has to come from your semester results first. If you only have semester SGPAs, the SGPA to CGPA calculator works it out with credit weighting.

Questions people ask

Is CGPA x 9.5 the official formula?

Only for some. CBSE published 9.5 for its Class 10 CGPA, and Delhi University uses it for degrees. Many engineering universities use a different rule, so 9.5 is not a national standard.

How do I convert percentage to CGPA?

Reverse your university's formula. For a multiply by 9.5 rule, divide by 9.5. For a subtract 0.75 rule, divide by 10 and add 0.75. Switch the calculator to percentage to CGPA and it does this for you.

Which number do I put on an application?

Whatever your university certifies. If the form asks for a percentage and your university issues a conversion certificate, use that figure and attach the certificate. Do not use a generic converter's output when your university publishes its own rule.
