CGPA to GPA Calculator (4.0 Scale) for US Applications
Short answer. CGPA divided by 10, times 4, is the formula most converters use, so 8.0 becomes 3.2. No US university or WES publishes it as official. Graduate schools mostly want your CGPA as printed, out of 10, and many read a First Class Indian degree as a B average, a 3.0.
The 4.0 estimate is a straight proportion, the method most online converters use. It is not an official conversion. The two university readings come from their published rules for Indian applicants, checked in October 2026. Other universities apply their own rules.
Why there is no official CGPA to GPA formula
A US GPA and an Indian CGPA are both averages of grade points, but the grades behind them are awarded on different curves. In many Indian universities a First Class starts at 60 percent, which would be a failing or near failing mark on many American scales. So a straight proportion, CGPA divided by 10 and multiplied by 4, says nothing about how good your degree is. It turns a strong 6.5 from a strictly graded university into 2.6, which looks weak on a 4.0 scale even though it may be First Class.
That is why no US university we checked publishes a formula, and WES does not publish its method either. Universities read your transcript against Indian grading norms, or ask an evaluator such as WES to. The proportion this calculator shows is useful for one thing only: a rough sense of where you stand when a form or a person insists on a number out of 4.
| CGPA out of 10 | Simple 4.0 estimate | What it often means on an Indian degree |
|---|---|---|
| 9.0 | 3.60 | First Class with Distinction at most universities |
| 8.0 | 3.20 | First Class; meets Oregon State’s 8 out of 10 benchmark where no class is printed |
| 7.0 | 2.80 | First Class at most universities |
| 6.5 | 2.60 | First Class under a 9.5 rule, Second Class under VTU’s; the estimate understates both |
| 6.0 | 2.40 | Often Second Class; depends on your university’s formula |
What US universities actually ask for
Graduate schools set a minimum, usually a B average or 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and then say what that means for an Indian degree. Their rules are more useful than any converter:
- Oregon State University says a cumulative average of 60 percent, First Class, is generally equivalent to a B average, and accepts 8 out of 10 where no classification is given.
- UCLA asks applicants from India for a master’s degree in first or high second class. In engineering and architecture, a first class bachelor’s degree may also be considered.
- UC Berkeley sets a usual minimum of 3.0 and asks that grades be transcribed, not converted, into US grades. It also accepts a WES evaluation.
- The University of Illinois Graduate College calculates its 3.0 minimum from the last two years of undergraduate study, and applies minimums by country.
Two things follow. First, put your CGPA on the application exactly as your university prints it, with the scale, for example 7.8 out of 10, unless the form explicitly tells you to convert. Second, if your early semesters were weak and your last two years strong, work out your last four semesters separately with the SGPA to CGPA calculator, because some universities look only at those.
When a converted GPA does matter
Some universities and scholarship forms do ask for a GPA on a 4.0 scale, and some ask for a WES evaluation, which reports a US equivalent GPA calculated from your individual course grades. If a university asks for WES, use the WES figure, not a calculator’s, because it is the number the university will see. Our guide to WES evaluation for Indian students explains which universities require it and which refuse it.
For Indian forms, such as bank education loans and scholarship cutoffs, you usually need a percentage instead. That depends on your university’s own formula, which the CGPA to percentage calculator covers. For Germany, the German grade calculator applies the formula German universities use.
Questions people ask
How do I convert CGPA to GPA on a 4.0 scale?
The common estimate is CGPA divided by 10, multiplied by 4, so 8.5 becomes 3.4. It is not an official conversion, and most US graduate schools ask you to report your CGPA as printed, out of 10.
Is 7 CGPA a good GPA for the US?
The simple estimate is 2.8, but that understates it. At most Indian universities 7.0 is a First Class degree, which universities such as Oregon State treat as a B average, the usual 3.0 minimum.
Should I convert my CGPA on the application form?
Only if the form tells you to. UC Berkeley, for example, asks that grades be transcribed rather than converted. Where a form only accepts a 4.0 figure, enter the estimate and state your original CGPA and scale in the additional information section.
What GPA does WES give for an Indian CGPA?
WES does not publish a fixed CGPA to GPA formula. Its course by course evaluation works from your individual course grades rather than your CGPA, so do not expect it to match a calculator. If a university asks for WES, the WES figure is the one it will use.
Does a 3 year degree affect my GPA?
Not the number itself, but it can matter more. Several US graduate schools want 16 years of education, so a 3 year bachelor’s may need a master’s on top before you can apply, whatever your grades.
