Short answer. The DS-160 is the online US visa application every F-1 student fills before booking a visa appointment in India. Each applicant needs their own. The AA barcode on its confirmation page must match the one used to book, or you cannot attend. It stays valid for a year, and the photo must be under six months old.
For an Indian student going to the US, the DS-160 sits between your I-20 and your visa interview. You fill it online, sign it electronically, and get a confirmation page with a barcode number starting with AA. That number is how you book your appointment, and the officer at your interview has the whole form in front of them. It is also the step where small slips cause the most avoidable trouble on interview day.
Everything here is from the official US visa information and appointment service for India and the US Embassy in India, checked in October 2026. For the full F-1 sequence and its fees, see our USA student visa guide, and for the interview itself, our list of F-1 visa interview questions.

The rules that matter in India
| Rule | What the official India site says |
|---|---|
| Who needs one | Every applicant, including children, needs their own DS-160 |
| How it is submitted | Online only; handwritten or typed forms are not accepted |
| Barcode | The confirmation number starting with AA is required to book your appointment, and must match the one in your appointment profile |
| On the day | Bring the printed confirmation page; without it you cannot attend |
| Validity | One year from the date of submission |
| Photo | Taken within the last six months, meeting the State Department’s size and content rules |
| Signature | Electronic; you certify everything is true, and misrepresentation can make you ineligible |
| Sex field | Select your sex at birth, male or female |
Before you start
Have these in front of you, because the form asks for them and an inconsistent answer is worse than a slow one:
- Your passport, valid, with the exact name spelling you will use everywhere.
- Your Form I-20, for your SEVIS ID, the school’s name and address, and the programme dates.
- Your travel history and any previous US visas or refusals.
- Your education and work history, with dates, addresses and supervisors where asked.
- Every social media username you have used on each platform in the last five years.
- A digital photo taken within the last six months that meets the State Department’s photo rules.
- Your parents’ details and, if you have them, details of relatives in the US.
Write down your Application ID as soon as the form gives you one, and save as you go. If the session ends and you have not saved or noted the ID, you start again from the beginning.
Faz's ruleYour DS-160 must say exactly what your I-20, your bank papers and your mouth will say at the window.
The officer reads your DS-160 before you speak. If it lists one funding source and you describe another, or leaves out a social media account that turns up later, the mismatch becomes the conversation. The form asks for the social media identifiers you have used in the past five years, and leaving one out can be treated as misrepresentation; since 2025 student applicants have also been asked to make their profiles public. Fill the form yourself, slowly, from your own documents. If an agent fills it, you still sign it and you still answer for every line.
If you need to correct it
Once submitted, a DS-160 cannot be edited; a correction means a new form with a new AA number. What happens next depends on when you booked. For appointments booked on or after 15 November 2023, you must bring both the original confirmation page used to book and the corrected one to your appointment. If you cannot bring both, you must cancel and reschedule using the new application number. Applicants whose appointments were booked before that date can attend with the corrected page.
The barcode rule is strict: if the DS-160 you bring does not match the one in your appointment profile, you will not be allowed to attend. Before you leave home, check that the AA number on your printed page is the one in your appointment confirmation.
After you submit
- Pay the visa application fee, also called the MRV fee. It is non refundable whether or not you get the visa, and the receipt is valid for 365 days, within which you must book your appointment.
- Book two appointments: biometrics at a Visa Application Center and the interview at the Embassy or a Consulate.
- At the Visa Application Center, your fingerprints are scanned; applicants aged 14 to 79 must attend in person.
- At the interview, bring your passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, your I-20 and your financial documents. Phones, smart watches, backpacks and sealed envelopes are not allowed in, and there is nowhere to store them.
Missing the interview marks you as a no show, and you must pay a new visa fee and restart the application. If your funds are an education loan, carry the sanction letter; our guide to the sanction letter as proof of funds covers what officers look for.
The honest closing take
The DS-160 is not where student visas are won, but it is where interviews go wrong before they start. A mismatched barcode can cost you your slot, and an answer that does not match your I-20 or your story becomes the officer’s first question. Neither has anything to do with how strong a student you are.
Give it a quiet two hours, your own documents and your own hands. Keep the Application ID, save often, use a new photo, and list every social media account you have used. Then check the AA number against your appointment before you print, and bring both pages if you ever had to correct it.
